BioShock Infinite

Introduction

Playing Bio Shock Infinite for the first time, one of the first things I noticed was the landscape. Columbia is shiny and colorful and strange, but there’s something far off about the whole thing. Then the shooting starts.

What I appreciate about it is the way the game seamlessly jumps between exploratory gunfights, weird powers, and narrative beats without ever losing its unique tone. It feels comfortable as a FPS, but there’s always some odd mechanic or environmental touch just around the next bend.

What Bio Shock Infinite Is

Bio Shock Infinite: Release Date, Setting, Story, and more Bio Shock Infinite is a first-person single-player action game, developed by Irrational Games and published by 2K. In the game, you assume the role of Booker DeWitt, a mercenary who is tasked with locating and rescuing a young woman named Elizabeth who has been trapped in the floating city of Columbia for the majority of her life. Columbia is arguably the most distinctive aspect of the game. Instead of navigating the depths of an oceanic city, players will be traveling throughout a massive hover metropolis, complete with fantastical architecture, steampunk-inspired technology, and hostile combatants.

The World Has a Very Distinctive Look The sky is bright, the buildings are grand, propaganda, contraptions, airships are all present in a world that may look a little triumphant at a distance. When you’re up close though you quickly see that its a lot darker. The game also features a strong emphasis on the dynamic between Booker and Elizabeth. She is not just a character that accompanies you on your quest.

How the Gameplay Works

Put simply, Bio Shock Infinite is First Person Shooter 101 mixed with magic and movement mechanics that require you to constantly adapt your strategy. You’ll use guns to shoot enemies all over Columbia, but the game uses pistols, shotguns and rifles as just a flavour of combat. Vigorsgrant Booker powerful but strange new abilities that may cause enemies to explode, be manipulated or break apart as you fight.

However, there’s another resource that underpins these powers, so you can’t just wield abilities to your advantage on repeat without a care for what you’ve got left. And then there’s the Sky-Lines. These tracks float through portions of Columbia and let Booker zip quickly through the world – and, meanwhile, bring the fight to him. Stepping onto a Sky-Line mid-fight can alter the entire dynamic, not having to be confined to the ground.

Tears Stunt another. Elizabeth has the power to reach out to mysterious tears in the universe, calling resources and even objects into the world. During some fights, these Tears can change the battlefield and offer you new choices when a skirmish starts to get a little out of control. And it’s often out of control. The mix of guns, Vigors, Sky-Lines, Tears, and environmental positioning means you can approach many encounters in a variety of ways, depending on what you’ve found and the circumstances.

Benefits of Playing Bio Shock Infinite

That randomness still adds a lot that works really well, too, like the way combat is not one-dimensional. It’s not just shoot till the room’s cleared. You might want to put a Vigor on the table before you go to finish enemies with the weapon, Sky-Line might be the way to snag that super advantageous spot, or Tear might come up with the perfect hack to do at the perfect time.

The world design is yet another primary reason to get involved with the game. Columbia is not simply the setting for the shooting. The architecture, the public space, the machinery, and the strange social vibe all combine to create a sense that you are just roaming through a real location with a history of its own. My favorite thing about it is probably the pairing of gameplay and narrative.

But Elizabeth brings something extra to the mix. Her role makes the walk through less lonely than what you usually get with a single-player shooter, and becomes even more so as the two men form a connection over the course of the game. There’s a tough mode for veterans, too, which brings the shooter’s general feeling closer to home for players after a more punishing experience.

Common Ways to Play

  • Story campaign: Take Booker and Elizabeth throughout Columbia as you discover what has occurred to the city.
  • Combat-centric encounters: Try out different combinations of weapons and Vigors until you discover the combination that matches your preferred style.
  • Expl Doration: Take a walk around your new neighborhood in Columbia to get a feel for the land, where supplies and secret places are.
  • Sky-Line combat: Elevate rail lines to get around fast and approach enemies from unaware angles.
  • Vigor experiment: test out varying superpowers to see how they impact on each encounter.
  • Combat against Tears: Exploit Elizabeth’s power to control Tears when other directions to the battle open up.
  • Achievements hunting: Progress through the campaign while earning Steam achievements.
  • Challenging play: Play again through 1999 Mode for an even greater challenge once you’ve completed the main quest.

Final Thoughts

Bio Shock Infinite is that kind of game where the environment does much of the work, but the mechanics are what give you motivation to come back. Columbia is astonishing, the Sky-Lines are a joy to ride, Vigors make run-of-the-mill shootouts considerably more chaotic and the Tears inject a little extra something into select encounters. But it’s the fusion that keeps you coming back.

You have a bizarre city over the clouds, complex narrative, unforgettable sidekick, high speed chases, powers, and a metric boat load of gunfights in between comparatively mellow moments. That it should be such an odd combination is pretty much part and parcel with why it’s so easy to remember all these years later. If you like story-rich FPS games with plenty of detail in the world around you and a gunplay game that gives you far more than just the option to shoot everything you see, Bio Shock Infinite is still a unique PC experience. It gets weird. That’s part of the fun.
